DC One Card Frequently Asked Questions
The DC One Card is a consolidated credential designed to give adults and children access to schools, DC government facilities and programs. Eventually, the DC One Card will be an access card for all DC government buildings and programs. For DC Public School students and participants in the Summer Youth Program (SYP), their DC One Cards include a bonus–immediate WMATA SmartTrip® capability to help them travel to and from school and their summer jobs. Note: The SYP only issues DC One Cards during the summer months.
Why is the District of Columbia issuing the DC One Card?
Consolidating identification cards the District government issues saves money and resources by allowing the government to print fewer cards overall. It also increases convenience and ease of access to services for District residents.
Where can I get a DC One Card?
Currently, SmarTrip-enabled DC One Cards are only being offered to DC Public Schools (DCPS) students and Department of Employment Services (DOES) Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants. Standard (without SmarTrip) DC One Cards are available at the following Parks and Recreation centers:

How do I use my DC One Card at the DC Public Library (DCPL)?
If you already have (or had) a library card, the library staff can set up your account so that you can use your DC One Card instead of a library card to borrow books and access DCPL collections and services. Just present your DC One Card and let the staff know you want to use it like a library card. If you don't already have an account at the library, present your DC One Card and let the staff know you want to open a library account using your DC One Card instead of a library card.
I lost my DC One Card. Where do I get a replacement?
Call the DC One Card Helpline at (202) 671- CARD (2273) during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm).
Is the DC One Card used to track what I do?
No. The DC One Card uses a database of basic user-directory information; enough to ensure that there is only one DC One Card per person, and only one person per DC One Card. The database also lists the DC One Card number and the agencies to which each card has been registered. The database works like a directory, associating a single DC One Card number with the many different user numbers a single individual may have as a participant in various programs at District agencies. The DC One Card program does not collect or share any data on how or when the DC One Card is used by any person.
DC One Card Privacy Policy
The data collected from DC One Card users and maintained in the DC One Card database shall be limited to the following information, which is necessary to identify the user, would be available from public sources and cannot be used to obtain any other data about the user:
1) Contact information: Name, address, telephone number 2) Gender 3) Date of birth 4) Last four digits of Social Security number (if provided) 5) District agencies/programs that have registered the particular card 6) Card number
7) Photograph Find a complete copy of the DC One Card privacy policy.

A SmarTrip® enabled DC One Card is used in place of a Metrorail paper farecard on Metrorail and cash/tokens on the Metrobus. Each rider must have his/her own DC One Card, farecard or pass.
- Your DC One Card is issued with a $0 balance SmartTrip chip. You must add money at a WMATA station for SmartTrip to work. You may also add value by using a credit card or debit card, including your Summer Youth Program debit card as long as it has a sufficient balance.
- You may transfer the value of a used farecard or Metrocheks worth any value onto a SmarTrip® enabled DC One Card. Each trade-in requires a separate transaction.
- A SmarTrip® enabled DC One Card will let you take one trip which results in a negative balance, but value must be added before it can be used again on Metrorail or Metrobus.
- The remaining value on a registered SmarTrip® enabled DC One Card that is lost or stolen can be replaced when reported. Cash refunds not available.
