Metro
The DC One Card with SmarTrip® technology is a permanent, rechargeable farecard. It's plastic–like a credit card–and is embedded with a special computer chip that keeps track of the value of the card.
The benefits of using SmarTrip include:
-
Using your SmarTrip®-enabled DC One Card is easy and fast! Instead of inserting a farecard through the Metrorail faregate slot, you simply touch the SmarTrip® DC One Card to the circular target panels on top of or inside station faregates. Likewise, you can tap the SmarTrip® farebox on Metrobus to pay your fare with SmarTrip. For more information, see the SmarTrip® on Metrobus Fact/FAQ sheet.*
-
Your SmarTrip®-enabled DC One Card is issued with a $0 balance, but, you may add up to $300 in Metro value on a SmarTrip® DC One Card, so it can last a long time between charging. See adding value to your SmarTrip® DC One Card to learn how to add funds to your DC One Card.
-
If you lose the card, you don't lose the value. Get a replacement DC One Card from the issuing agency (may require a fee) or purchase a SmarTrip® card from any Metro outlet. Call (202) 671-CARD (2273) if you have questions about how to receive a replacement card. Once you have your new card, you can call the SmarTrip® Regional Customer Service Center at 1 (888) 762-7874 to have your DC One Card updated with the value on the card at the time you notified 671-CARD it was lost.
Note: Your DC One Card must be registered with WMATA before it can be used. Although the DC One Card includes a Metro SmarTrip chip, please note that it cannot be used for reduced fare travel. Students will need to continue to use their District Department of Transportation (DDOT) School Transit Subsidy Program for all subsidized travel.
